The White Noise Machine: Six Months of Data
Rick on white noise machines: the frequency comparison, the Oura data across 14 nights, and the machine that moved the number. Sleep Made Simple — 2026. See full review →
White noise machines are the most affordable intervention in my protocol and the one with the clearest mechanism: consistent ambient sound masks variable environmental noise that would otherwise trigger wake events. The research supports their use for sleep maintenance insomnia specifically — the type I have.
I evaluated four over six months. Here is the data.
Machine 1: LectroFan Classic ($50)
Twenty sound options, adjustable volume, fan or noise options. Data after 30 days: wake events decreased by 0.3 per night versus the no-machine baseline (from 2.1 to 1.8). Not dramatic. Real. The LectroFan is the standard recommendation in this category and it earns it — it's reliable, quiet, and doesn't generate audible distortion at moderate volumes.
Machine 2: Marpac Dohm Classic ($45)
Mechanical fan noise rather than digital recording. The Dohm's sound is smoother than digital alternatives because it is actual air movement rather than a recording of air movement. Subjective quality difference: meaningful. Data: wake events 1.7 per night average over 30 days, slightly better than the LectroFan. HRV slightly higher. Correlation unclear but consistent.
Machine 3: Hatch Restore 2 ($199)
Not just white noise — a combined sleep aid with sunset dimming light, guided sleep meditations, and sunrise alarm. The sleep stories specifically produced a measurable sleep onset improvement: from 24 minutes average down to 19 minutes over 30 days. The sunrise alarm produced the most pleasant waking experience of any alarm I've used in three years. This product is doing several things and it is doing several of them well.
Current recommendation: Hatch Restore 2 for users who want more than just white noise, Marpac Dohm for users who want the best pure white noise at minimum cost.
